The Fort Laramie Rendezvous was located in the town of Fort Laramie, not Laramie, and not at the actual Fort Laramie. The rendezvous ran from June 15, 16 and 17. The Wind River Indian Dancers, Willie LeClaire, Buffalo Bill, the Southeast Wyoming Pipe and Drums, and mountain men carried the American Flag into the rendezvous during the Opening Ceremony. The Opening Ceremony was delayed when the flag rope broke. Several people tried to grab the escaped flag rope but they were unsuccessful until someone brought in a cherry picker. Eventually the flag rope was repaired and the Opening Ceremony was resumed. Willie LeClaire described how the Indians lived in this area. Buffalo Bill spoke about the Lewis and Clark expedition and entertained the crowd with music and songs that were sung by the explorers and other mountain men. Willie Leclaire even translated into Indian sign language a text spoken by Buffalo Bill. The Wind River Indian Dancers put on several shows that included the Men's Grass Dance, Women's Grass Dance, Warrior's Dance, Women's Dance, and the Frantic Dance. A Candy Cannon fired candy at the children several times during the day. It was loud and shot the candy quite a distance, and the children loved it. Some mountain men wandered around the renezvous, while others set up tents to show how the mountain men lived. There were plenty of vendors selling crafts, books and mountain man materials so you could create your own outfit. |
